The Geek Woman’s Gift Guide

December 2nd, 2014
I'm not a fangirl I'm a fanwoman

I started to call this the “Geek Girl’s Gift Guide,” but if you don’t already know why I changed that title, just read a few more posts, and I think you’ll get the message.

More and more women are proclaiming themselves geeks and are looking for some thoughtful gifts from friends and family. No fear, I have just what you need here – for all sorts of geeks (Star Wars, Dr. Who, Whedonverse, etc.). Here are a few of my top picks. Oh, and if you feel so inclined, I won’t say no to receiving some of these myself.

Atari Flashback 5 Console

Atari game systemAny woman who was a kid in the 80s will appreciate this. I myself never had an Atari, but I always wanted one, and now I can have a game system pre-loaded with the best Atari games – including Centipede, Space Invaders (my personal favorite) and Asteroids. This might be number one on my want list this year.

Floppy Disk Coasters

Floppy disk coastersBecause I don’t just love geek stuff but also love wine, these are a close second on my want list. Sure, those millenials I invite over won’t have a clue what they are, but they’ll be great conversation pieces for those of us in the know. “Remember when they used to be twice this size?”

I'm not a fangirl I'm a fanwomanBecause right? Anyone who saw the title of this post should know why I love this shirt. For those of us who are fanwomen, we know how often the word “fangirl” is used in a derogatory way, and I love that this shirt speaks to that. Just know that if you’re buying this for me, I’ll take the long-sleeve version, thanks.

QR Code Pendant

QR Code PendantOkay, okay, I know that QR codes are like, so over. But there’s a part of me that thinks it would be kind-of awesome to have one handy when someone is wanting my contact information. Instead of a business card, here, just scan my necklace – it takes you to my website with all sorts of information about me. This would also be cool as a bracelet or keychain – and possibly a wee bit more accessible from there, as well.

BookBook Laptop Case

Laptop with case that looks like a bookAnyone who knows me knows I’m a huge fan of reading – like, HUGE. So what better way to demonstrate a love of reading than to encase your laptop in a book? Seriously, though, I’m in sore need of a case for my laptop, and one that looks like a book just emphasizes how much of a nerd I am – in other words, it’s perfect for a geek woman.

R2D2 Measuring Cups

R2D2 measuring cupsSo I don’t actually cook, but if I did, I would totally want a set of these. In fact, I want a set of these anyways, but my partner (who does cook) tells me they aren’t sensible. As if I’m looking for a sensible set of measuring cups. Seriously, wouldn’t you rather measure out food in R2D2?

The Secret History of Wonder Woman

The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore

Oh come on now, you didn’t really think I was going to do a whole list of geek gifts for women and not include Wonder Woman somewhere in here? And sure, there are plenty of knick knacks I could include, but why not learn something while we’re geeking out? This book is all about how Wonder Woman came to be, including the not-so-innocent creator of the comic series (but really, is anyone surprised by this? I mean, WW is always being tied up – just sayin’). And to be honest, this one is really the top of my list, making that sweet Atari second. Of course, I’d be happy with either one.

That’s Enough Social Interaction T-Shirt

T-shirt: You read my t-shirt. That's enough social interaction for today.Okay, to be fair, not all geeks are introverts – but a lot of us are. And this shirt is absolutely perfect for that introverted someone in your life who would rather be working at their computer. I might buy five of these and wear one every day of the week, as a matter of fact.

Sunnydale T-Shirt

Sunnydale High School t-shirtAlright, alright, sorry for all the t-shirts. But sometimes that’s just the best way to show off how much of a geek you are. And no geek woman list of mine would be complete without a nod to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Who wouldn’t love to own a shirt straight from the Hellmouth? Oh sure, it’s been burned to the ground and sucked into the earth, but there’ll always be a special place in our hearts for good old Sunnydale.

Your Life is Your Story Notebook

Your Life is Your StoryMany of us self-proclaimed geek women also happen to be creative types – whether of the writing or doodling kind. This notebook is a perfect way for us to capture all those great story ideas or sketches – it’s even labeled appropriately on the back with “Write well, edit often.” Truer words were never written. Okay, I might be a bit biased – the artist is a friend of mine, but she does some awesome work, and no gift guide of mine would be complete without including something of hers.

The truth is, I could go on for ages about what I think are great gifts for the geek woman, but I’d love to hear from you. What are the geek gifts you’re craving this season (or heck, any season for that matter)? Please share!
